We spend so much time focused on everything that seems wrong with the world that it can be easy to miss what is happening right in front of us. From Starship and artificial intelligence to robotics, medicine and space exploration, humanity may be entering one of the most extraordinary technological periods in history.

Artificial intelligence is about to change more than how we plan trips—it could change how we discover destinations in the first place. From personalized itineraries to real-time recommendations, AI may reshape travel while making accurate information and great destination experiences more important than ever.

Virginia’s new 2025 tourism data shows visitors spent $98.2 million in Warren County. But a deeper look at where that money was spent reveals something even more important: our biggest tourism opportunity may not be attracting more visitors, but getting more economic value from the visitors already here.

The biggest mistake local tourism boards make may be confusing destination marketing with destination development. Attracting visitors matters—but what happens after they arrive can matter even more.

Destination websites aren't going away, but their role is changing. As AI reshapes how travelers discover and plan trips, tourism websites may evolve from digital visitor guides into the information infrastructure—and digital concierge—for an entire destination.

Throughout history, communities have resisted new technologies, yet innovation rarely stops—it simply finds another route. As opposition to data centers grows across the country, the technology industry is already exploring alternatives ranging from floating facilities to orbital data centers. The question isn't whether computing demand will continue growing. The question is where the infrastructure of the future will be built.
