What Do Near-Death Experiences Actually Tell Us?

Author's Note: This article is intended simply as a thought-provoking exploration of consciousness and some of the questions surrounding it. A heart stops.

Blood circulation collapses.

Doctors begin trying to bring someone back.

And then, sometimes, something strange happens.

The person survives.

Later, they describe an experience.

They may remember leaving their body. They may describe moving through darkness or toward a light. Some report encountering deceased relatives. Others describe an overwhelming feeling of peace or love. Some experience what they call a life review.

And occasionally, people claim they saw or heard things happening around them while they were unconscious.

These stories are usually placed into one of two boxes.

One side says:

“It's proof of an afterlife.”

The other says:

“It's just the brain hallucinating as it dies.”

I don't think either answer is particularly satisfying.

Because both jump ahead of the evidence.

So instead of asking whether near-death experiences prove life after death, I want to ask a different question:

What do near-death experiences actually tell us?


First, Near-Death Experiences Are Real Experiences

Let's establish something important.

When I say NDEs are “real,” I'm not saying everything someone experiences during an NDE objectively occurred exactly as they perceived it.

I'm saying the experience itself is real.

People really report them.

Researchers have studied them for decades.

And there are recognizable patterns among those reports.

Researchers at the University of Virginia's Division of Perceptual Studies list commonly reported features including feelings of leaving the body, unusually clear thinking, darkness or a tunnel, brilliant light, intense peace or unconditional love, life reviews and encounters with deceased people. Not every NDE contains these elements, and some experiences are frightening rather than peaceful.

That alone makes NDEs worth studying.

Something is happening.

The question is what.


The Similarities Are Interesting

One thing that caught my attention when I started digging into NDE research was the repetition.

Different people describe different experiences, of course.

But certain themes appear again and again.

Separation from the body.

Heightened awareness.

A feeling of entering another place.

Communication that doesn't seem to involve normal speech.

Deceased relatives.

Light.

A life review.

A feeling of overwhelming love.

And sometimes a decision—or instruction—to return.

That doesn't prove those experiences represent another realm.

Humans share similar brains. Similar physiology could theoretically produce similar experiences.

But the similarities mean we shouldn't simply dismiss the phenomenon either.

There's something here worth understanding.


Then There Is the Clarity Problem

This may be one of the most interesting parts to me.

If an NDE were simply the product of a severely compromised brain, you might expect people to describe confusion.

Fragments.

Dreamlike imagery.

Disconnected memories.

And some experiences undoubtedly may work that way.

But many NDE experiencers describe something very different: an experience that felt extraordinarily lucid—sometimes more real than ordinary waking consciousness.

UVA researchers specifically note reports in which people describe their minds functioning more clearly and rapidly than usual.

That doesn't mean the brain couldn't create such an experience.

Dreams can feel real. Psychedelic experiences can feel profound. Our brains are capable of producing remarkable states of consciousness.

But it creates an interesting question.

Why would severely disrupted physiology sometimes correspond with an experience perceived as extraordinary mental clarity?

That question becomes especially important when we're exploring the relationship between the brain and consciousness.


The Most Interesting Cases Aren't About Tunnels or Lights

If we're trying to determine what NDEs tell us about consciousness, I don't think the tunnel or the light is the most important part.

The most interesting cases are what researchers sometimes call veridical NDEs.

These involve people reporting information they seemingly should not have been able to obtain through their ordinary senses.

Someone might claim to have observed events elsewhere in a hospital.

Someone might describe something that happened while medical personnel believed them incapable of normal awareness.

Or they might report information that researchers can subsequently attempt to verify.

UVA researchers specifically seek these cases because, if sufficiently documented, they bear directly on the question of whether consciousness can obtain information independently of normal sensory pathways.

Notice the wording there.

If sufficiently documented.

That's important.

Extraordinary stories aren't enough.

If we're trying to understand consciousness scientifically, we need cases where timelines, medical conditions, observations and information can be independently checked.

That's a much higher bar.

And it should be.


But We Need to Be Careful With “Brain Death”

This is an area where discussions about NDEs can quickly become misleading.

You'll sometimes hear:

“This person was dead for ten minutes and saw everything happening.”

But “dead” isn't a precise scientific description.

Cardiac arrest means the heart has stopped effectively pumping blood.

Clinical death is not necessarily the same thing as irreversible biological death.

And the absence of easily measured brain activity doesn't necessarily establish that absolutely no neural activity exists anywhere in the brain.

That's why timing matters enormously.

When exactly did the experience occur?

Before consciousness was lost?

During resuscitation?

As circulation returned?

During recovery?

The person experiencing the NDE usually can't answer that question with a stopwatch.

That uncertainty makes studying these experiences incredibly difficult.

It also means we should be skeptical whenever someone claims a single NDE has definitively proven consciousness exists outside the brain.

But the same caution should work in the other direction.

If we can't precisely establish when an experience occurred, we also shouldn't automatically claim we've demonstrated exactly which neurological event produced it.

Sometimes the scientifically responsible answer is:

We don't know yet.


Could the Brain Explain NDEs?

Possibly.

There are several proposed neurological and psychological explanations.

Researchers have explored the possible roles of oxygen deprivation, carbon dioxide changes, neurotransmitters, sleep-related mechanisms, drugs, altered temporal-lobe activity and other changes occurring during extreme physiological stress.

Some may explain portions of the phenomenon.

But explaining one feature isn't necessarily the same as explaining the entire experience.

A neurological mechanism capable of producing tunnel-like vision, for example, wouldn't automatically explain an apparently accurate perception of an event outside someone's normal sensory range.

Conversely, an unusual perception that hasn't yet been explained doesn't automatically prove consciousness left the body.

Those are separate questions.

UVA's researchers describe the causes of NDEs as complex and not fully known, noting that various medical and psychological explanations have been proposed.

That's probably where the science actually stands.

Not:

“We proved the afterlife.”

And not:

“Science explained all of this years ago.”

But:

“We have several hypotheses, a growing body of observations, and unanswered questions.”

I can live with that.


The Aftereffects May Be Just as Interesting as the Experience

There's another piece of NDE research that doesn't get nearly as much attention.

What happens afterward?

Many people who report NDEs describe significant changes in their lives.

Their fear of death may decrease.

Their priorities may change.

Relationships become more important.

Material possessions may become less important.

Some report becoming more compassionate or feeling a stronger sense of connection with other people.

Recent UVA research notes profound aftereffects including reduced fear of death and increased compassion, although integrating an NDE can also create psychological and social difficulties for some experiencers.

That fascinates me.

Because whether the experience occurred entirely inside the brain or involved something beyond it, something happened powerful enough to permanently alter how some people approach life.

That's worth paying attention to.


Here's Where This Connects to My Consciousness Question

In my earlier article, I asked:

What if consciousness doesn't come from the brain?

The conventional model is essentially:

Brain → Consciousness

The brain generates consciousness.

Damage the brain and consciousness changes.

Turn off the brain permanently and consciousness ends.

That's certainly consistent with a tremendous amount of neurological evidence.

But there is another model worth considering as a thought experiment.

What if the brain doesn't produce consciousness?

What if it interfaces with it?

Think about a radio.

Damage the speaker and the sound becomes distorted.

Destroy the radio and the music stops coming through it.

But that doesn't mean the radio created the broadcast.

The radio received and translated it.

I'm not saying that's how consciousness works.

I don't know.

Nobody currently does.

But if consciousness were somehow more fundamental than the brain, certain phenomena surrounding death might look very different.

NDEs become especially interesting under that model.

Not because they prove it.

But because they potentially give us somewhere to test it.


So What Do NDEs Actually Tell Us?

After looking at the research, I think we can reasonably say several things.

People report profound experiences near death.

Those experiences contain recurring patterns.

They can produce lasting changes in people's lives.

There are proposed neurological explanations for many elements of NDEs.

There are also unusual cases that researchers believe deserve further investigation, particularly reports containing apparently verifiable information.

And perhaps most importantly:

We still don't completely understand what consciousness is.

That's the part I keep coming back to.

We know an extraordinary amount about correlations between brain activity and conscious experience.

But correlation isn't necessarily the end of the philosophical question about what consciousness fundamentally is.

Near-death experiences sit right on that boundary.

Between neuroscience and philosophy.

Between measurable physiology and subjective experience.

Between what we understand and what we don't.


Maybe That's the Real Lesson

I don't think NDEs give us permission to declare that we've proven what happens after death.

But I also don't think our current understanding gives us permission to dismiss every unusual experience because it doesn't fit neatly into the model we already have.

Science works best in the uncomfortable space between those positions.

Observe.

Measure.

Test.

Challenge.

Try to reproduce.

Look for alternative explanations.

And when the evidence doesn't give us an answer yet, resist the temptation to manufacture one.

Maybe consciousness ends when the brain permanently stops functioning.

Maybe consciousness is somehow capable of existing independently of it.

Maybe the answer is stranger than either possibility.

I don't know.

But I think near-death experiences tell us something important even before we solve the mystery.

The question of consciousness isn't finished.

And if we're willing to investigate the places where our current explanations become uncertain, we may eventually discover that the boundary between life, death and consciousness is far more interesting than we ever imagined.
